Where’s Your Grandma From?
Grandma’s Summerville. Grandpa’s Goose Creek. Nana’s Ladson. Pop’s North Charleston.
Record Grandma or Grandpa telling what their hometown was like when they were little. Send it in, and we’ll turn it into a picture book the grandkids can keep forever. Free, ready for the holidays.

Grandma talks. The kids listen. We do the rest.
Ask at the table
Over Thanksgiving, the grandkids ask the five questions below. Record the answers as a voice memo on any phone. Short videos work too.
Send it in
Upload the recording and up to five old photos right here. It takes about two minutes.
Get the book
Within 10 days you get a picture book of Grandma’s hometown, in her own words, to print or share.
The five questions
Each answer becomes one page of the book.
- 1What town did you grow up in? What was your street like?
- 2Where was your favorite place to go when you were my age?
- 3What could you buy with one dollar?
- 4What games did you play outside?
- 5What’s one thing in town that’s still there from when you were little?
Tip: let Grandma wander. The best stories come from the “oh, and another thing…” moments.

Every hometown is welcome, near or far.
Got it. Thank you!
Grandma’s story is safe with us. Your picture book will be on its way within 10 days.
Send another storyGood to know
Is the book really free?
Yes. Every family that sends a story gets a free picture book file to print or share. You never need to visit or buy anything.
What if Grandma grew up somewhere else?
Every hometown is welcome, near or far. Summerville, North Charleston, Goose Creek and Ladson stories may also show up on Backstory, our local history show, if you say yes.
When is the deadline?
Send your story by December 7 and your book will be ready by December 20, in time for the holidays.
What happens to our photos and recording?
Your originals stay with you. We keep private copies, apart from any clinic records, only to make your book. We use your email or cell only to send it. We share your story on the show or website only if you check that box.
Can we send more than one grandparent?
Of course. Send each grandparent’s story on its own and each one gets a book.
Backstory is presented by Charleston Pain Relief Center, 2294 Otranto Road, North Charleston. Helping Lowcountry families get back to the things they love since 2008.
