If gabapentin isn’t working, we should talk. The Charleston Neuropathy Protocol combines 5 advanced technologies, refined over 18 years, to help patients restore sensation and reduce pain — without pills, needles, or surgery.
The Charleston Neuropathy Protocol
Peripheral neuropathy affects 20 million Americans. Most are told the same thing: “take gabapentin and hope it helps.” For most patients, it doesn’t — or it works briefly, then the pain comes back louder. That’s because gabapentin masks nerve pain without repairing the underlying nerve damage.
Charleston Pain Relief Center has been treating peripheral neuropathy since 2008. Over 18 years and thousands of patients, we’ve refined a protocol that addresses the root cause: the damaged nerves themselves. We don’t mask pain. We help the body repair.
The 5 Technologies We Combine
No other clinic in the Lowcountry combines these five modalities in a single protocol. Each one addresses a different aspect of nerve repair. Combined, they produce the results our patients rely on.
1. Class IV Laser Therapy (Summus Medical Laser)
Deep-tissue photobiomodulation stimulates nerve cell regeneration and reduces inflammation in the nerve pathway. FDA-cleared. Painless. No downtime.
2. SoftWave Tissue Regeneration Therapy
Unfocused shockwave technology triggers the body’s natural healing response. Activates stem cells, breaks up scar tissue around damaged nerves, and stimulates new blood vessel growth to nourish nerve tissue. FDA-cleared for chronic pain.
3. Red Light / Infrared Therapy
Targeted red and near-infrared wavelengths penetrate tissue to support mitochondrial function in nerve cells. Reduces oxidative stress, supports cellular repair, and increases local circulation.
4. PEMF Therapy (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)
Low-level electromagnetic pulses stimulate nerve cell voltage and promote ion exchange critical to nerve signaling. Particularly effective for diabetic neuropathy patients.
5. Targeted Nutritional Support
Nerve regeneration requires specific nutrients: alpha-lipoic acid, B-complex vitamins, acetyl-L-carnitine, and others. Our team builds a protocol tailored to your blood work and medications, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal.
Who This Protocol Is For
- Diabetic neuropathy — burning, tingling, or numbness in feet and hands
- Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) — lingering nerve damage after cancer treatment
- Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy — when no specific cause has been identified
- Post-surgical nerve damage — nerve pain following spine or joint surgery
- Traumatic nerve injury — from auto accidents, falls, or compression injuries
- Medication-induced neuropathy — from statins, antibiotics, or other drugs
If Gabapentin Isn’t Working
You’re not alone. Up to 60% of neuropathy patients on gabapentin report incomplete pain relief — and many experience side effects worse than the pain: brain fog, weight gain, dizziness, depression. Our protocol is designed for exactly this patient. We work with your physician to safely reduce or eliminate the medication as your nerves begin to repair.
Important: Never stop prescription neuropathy medication without medical supervision. Our team communicates with your doctor throughout treatment.
What to Expect From Treatment
First visit (90 minutes)
Full medical history, neurological exam, severity staging assessment, and treatment plan review. You leave knowing exactly what’s going on and what it will take to improve.
Treatment phase (12-24 weeks typical)
2-3 sessions per week initially, tapering as nerve function returns. Most patients report noticeable symptom improvement within 4-6 weeks.
Long-term maintenance
Monthly maintenance visits and at-home support to prevent recurrence. Lifestyle and nutritional guidance tailored to your condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from gabapentin or Lyrica?
Gabapentin and Lyrica mask pain by blocking nerve signals. They don’t repair the nerve. Our protocol supports actual nerve regeneration through cellular repair, improved circulation, and reduced inflammation. Most patients aim to reduce or eliminate these medications as their nerves heal.
Can neuropathy be reversed?
It depends on the stage. Early and moderate neuropathy often shows dramatic improvement. Severe, long-standing neuropathy takes longer and the improvement ceiling may be lower — but almost every patient we see sees meaningful reduction in pain, burning, and numbness.
How long before I notice results?
Most patients report reduced burning and stabbing pain within 4-6 weeks. Improvement in numbness and balance typically follows in weeks 6-12. The earlier you address the neuropathy, the faster and more complete the improvement.
Is the protocol painful?
No. Class IV laser, SoftWave, red light, and PEMF are all well-tolerated. Many patients fall asleep during sessions. Nothing about our approach involves needles, medication, or surgery.
Who should NOT receive this protocol?
Patients with active pacemakers, certain implanted medical devices, active cancer under current treatment, or pregnancy may not be candidates for all components. We carefully screen every patient during the initial consultation.
Is this covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan. We run a no-cost benefits check before you start any treatment. We accept HSA, FSA, and Care Credit financing.
