How Class IV laser therapy actually works
Most “laser therapy” devices on the market are Class III “cold lasers” — useful for surface-level work but limited in depth. The Summus is a Class IV “high-power” laser, which is why patients call it Fast-Acting: the higher power delivers therapeutic photons deep into muscle, ligament and disc tissue, where the actual injury lives.
Photons reach deep tissue
Class IV laser delivers concentrated infrared light several inches into muscle, tendon, ligament, joint, and disc tissue — places red light panels and Class III lasers can’t reach.
Mitochondria absorb the light
The photons get absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the cells’ energy producers. ATP production climbs — your body finally has the fuel for repair.
Inflammation drops, blood flow rises
Nitric oxide release improves circulation. Pro-inflammatory cytokines down-regulate. The damaged area gets the resources it needs to heal.
You feel it within sessions
That’s the “fast-acting” part. Many patients feel meaningful pain reduction inside 1 to 3 sessions — sometimes inside the first one. Lasting tissue change typically takes 4 to 8 sessions.
The Summus Medical Class IV Laser — clinical-grade power, deep penetration
There’s a reason we chose Summus. Class IV laser systems have been around for years, but the Summus stands out for its consistent power output, optimized wavelength mix, and clinically-validated treatment protocols. It’s the same category of device used in NFL training rooms, orthopedic centers and pain clinics nationwide — except we have it on-site in North Charleston, integrated with our chiropractic, decompression, SoftWave and PEMF stack.

Therapeutic-grade power output
Class IV lasers operate above 500 mW (the Summus runs higher) — the level needed to drive photons deep enough to reach the actual injured tissue, not just the skin surface.
Optimized wavelength mix
Multiple wavelengths in one device target different tissue depths. Customizable per condition — neuropathy, low back, knee, neck — different protocol for each.
Layered with our other therapies
Class IV laser drives down acute pain; SoftWave stimulates stem cells; PEMF restores cellular voltage; decompression handles disc-specific cases. We layer them based on what your case actually needs.
What Fast-Acting Laser Therapy treats
Class IV laser is one of the most versatile therapies in the clinic. It works on anything where inflammation, nerve compression, or stalled tissue healing are part of the picture:
Peripheral neuropathy
Class IV laser is the cornerstone of our Charleston Neuropathy Protocol. Drives circulation back into damaged nerves and supports nerve regeneration in feet and hands.
Visit Neuropathy hubChronic back pain
Drives inflammation out of disc, muscle, and ligament tissue. Most powerful when layered with Hill-DT decompression and chiropractic adjustments.
Visit Back Pain hubDisc & nerve pain
Sciatica, herniated discs, radiculopathy. Laser used alongside decompression accelerates the disc healing process significantly.

Patellar tendinopathy, IT band, meniscal irritation, knee osteoarthritis. One of the most common areas we treat with the Summus.
See knee pain optionsTennis & golfer’s elbow
Lateral and medial epicondylitis. Often paired with SoftWave for chronic cases that haven’t responded to rest, ice or PT.
Frozen shoulder & rotator cuff
Adhesive capsulitis and chronic rotator cuff tendinopathy respond well to Class IV laser combined with adjustments.
Plantar fasciitis
Class IV laser shuts down the chronic fascia inflammation. Particularly powerful when combined with SoftWave on the OrthoGold.
Achilles tendinopathy
Chronic Achilles pain that’s resisted stretching, ice and rest. Class IV laser reaches the actual tendon damage.
Hip pain & bursitis
Trochanteric bursitis and chronic hip pain that hurts on stairs and side-sleeping.

Accelerates wound healing and reduces post-op inflammation. Many patients use laser to recover from orthopedic surgery faster.
Whiplash & auto-accident pain
Soft tissue trauma from rear-end collisions responds quickly to Class IV laser combined with chiropractic.
Top Class IV laser brands compared — and where Summus fits
If you’ve researched Class IV laser therapy, you’ve probably seen the major brand names: LightForce, K-Laser, Multi Radiance, ASA Laser, Apollo, and Aspen Laser. They’re all real clinical-grade systems with FDA clearance — the differences come down to power output, wavelength configuration, treatment protocols, and price tier. Honest landscape:
Summus Medical Class IV Laser
Clinical-grade Class IV system with consistent therapeutic power output and optimized wavelength mix. Same FDA-cleared category as LightForce and K-Laser, with the price discipline that lets us layer laser with SoftWave, Hill-DT decompression and PEMF in the same visit. The same Summus technology used in major sports medicine clinics nationwide.
LightForce (Chattanooga)
One of the most-recognized Class IV laser brands in the U.S. Used by the NFL Combine and many pro sports teams. Premium pricing per session. High-output dual-wavelength system.
K-Laser
Italian-engineered Class IV system. Strong research backing for orthopedic conditions. Multi-wavelength with sophisticated treatment protocols. Premium tier.
Multi Radiance
Combines Class IV laser with super-pulsed laser, SLD and red light in one unit. Lower peak power than single-mode Class IV systems but unique multi-source approach.
ASA Laser
European premium brand, strong in research settings. High-power output, sophisticated waveforms. Less common in U.S. chiropractic clinics.
Apollo & Aspen Laser
Mid-tier U.S. Class IV brands. Solid clinical performance at price points below LightForce and K-Laser. Common in chiropractic and PT clinics.
What matters more than the brand: (1) is the device a true Class IV (above 500 mW therapeutic output), (2) is the protocol programmed for your specific condition, and (3) is the practitioner experienced in laser treatment planning. We score yes on all three with Summus at Charleston Pain Relief Center.
Class IV laser vs Red Light vs Cold Laser — what’s the difference?
All three fall under “photobiomodulation” — using light to drive cellular change. But they’re different tools for different jobs:
Class IV laser (Summus)
Targeted, high-power, fast. 5–10 minute sessions on a specific injury. Penetrates several inches deep. Best for acute injuries, deep tendon/joint pain, neuropathy, post-trauma. Most patients feel relief inside 1–3 sessions.
Red Light Therapy Bed (NEO)
Whole-body, lower-intensity, longer. 15–20 minute full-body sessions. Best for systemic recovery, sleep, skin, longevity. Pairs perfectly with Class IV laser — laser handles the specific injury, the bed handles whole-body recovery.
Class III “cold” laser
Surface-level, low-power. Below 500 mW output. Cheaper equipment, common in basic chiropractic clinics. Useful for surface tissue but doesn’t reach the depth a Class IV system can.
For chronic, deep, or fast-results-needed cases — Class IV is the right tool. For systemic recovery and longevity — the red light bed. For surface-only work — Class III cold laser will do, but it’s a different category.
What to expect during a Class IV laser session
5–10 minutes per area
Class IV laser is fast. The handheld applicator is moved over the treatment area; you’ll feel a gentle warmth and nothing else.
4–8 sessions typical
Many patients feel relief in the first session. Lasting tissue change usually takes 4–8 sessions for chronic conditions, fewer for acute injuries.
No drugs, no downtime
Walk in, walk out. Athletes train same-day. No anesthesia, no recovery time, no activity restrictions.
Often combined with our other therapies
Class IV laser layers beautifully with chiropractic, Hill-DT decompression, SoftWave and PEMF. Many patients get multiple modalities on the same visit.
Who’s not a candidate
Class IV laser is one of the safest non-invasive therapies. We won’t recommend it if any of these apply:
- Pregnancy near the treatment site
- Active malignancy at or near the treatment area
- Direct application over the thyroid, eyes, or testes
- Active hemorrhage or anticoagulant overuse (relative)
- Photosensitive medications (some antibiotics, certain antidepressants, accutane)

What is the difference between Class IV laser and “Fast-Acting Laser Therapy”?
Same thing. Class IV laser is the technical/clinical name (FDA classification based on power output above 500 mW). Fast-Acting Laser Therapy is the patient-friendly name we use because most patients feel meaningful relief in 1 to 3 sessions — sometimes the first one. The Summus device we use is an FDA-cleared Class IV laser system.
How is Class IV laser different from “cold laser” or Class III laser?
Power output. Class III (cold) laser operates below 500 mW — useful for surface tissue but limited in depth. Class IV operates above 500 mW (Summus runs higher) — driving photons several inches deep where tendons, ligaments, joints and discs actually live. Different category, different clinical results.
How does Summus compare to LightForce, K-Laser, Multi Radiance or Apollo?
LightForce, K-Laser, Multi Radiance, ASA Laser, Apollo and Aspen Laser are the most-searched Class IV laser brands. All FDA-cleared therapeutic-grade systems. Summus delivers the same clinical category at price discipline that lets us layer laser with SoftWave, decompression and PEMF in the same visit. What matters more than brand is whether the device is true Class IV (above 500 mW) and whether the protocol is programmed to your specific condition.
Does Class IV laser hurt?
No. The applicator is moved over the treatment area; you’ll feel a gentle warmth and nothing else. Most patients describe the experience as relaxing.
How fast does Class IV laser work?
Most patients feel meaningful pain relief inside 1 to 3 sessions — sometimes within the first session. That’s why we call it Fast-Acting. Lasting tissue change for chronic conditions usually takes 4 to 8 sessions.
How long is a session?
5 to 10 minutes per treatment area. The Summus is fast — a typical visit including the laser plus chiropractic or other layered therapies still finishes within 30 minutes.
What does Class IV laser treat?
Peripheral neuropathy (cornerstone of our Charleston Neuropathy Protocol), chronic back pain, knee pain and arthritis, plantar fasciitis, tennis and golfer’s elbow, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tendinopathy, achilles tendinopathy, hip bursitis, sports injuries, post-surgical recovery, sciatica from disc compression, and whiplash/auto-accident soft tissue trauma.
Is Class IV laser the same as red light therapy?
Both are photobiomodulation but used differently. Class IV laser is targeted (specific injury site) and high-power for fast acute pain relief. Red light therapy bed is whole-body, lower intensity, longer session — best for systemic recovery, sleep, skin and longevity. Many of our patients use both.
Will my insurance cover Class IV laser?
Class IV laser is typically not covered by insurance and is paid out of pocket. We offer transparent package pricing, accept HSA and FSA cards, and offer payment plans.
Can I do laser if I’m pregnant or have cancer?
Pregnancy and active malignancy near the treatment site are contraindications. Direct application over the thyroid, eyes or testes is also avoided. Photosensitive medications are screened during your initial consultation.
