What is Spinal Misalignment?

Spinal misalignment can be the result of a number of issues. The spine can become misaligned due to an accident, past injury, tension on the spine, or even emotional distress. The human body relies heavily on the spine to provide support during movement, and even a seemingly insignificant pull can misalign the body’s structure.

Misalignment of the spine, also called subluxation, can lead to several health problems including joint damage, nerve damage, muscle damage, and tissue damage. In addition to each of these issues, spinal misalignment can cause chronic pain that affects an individual’s ability to function normally.

Symptoms related to misaligned spines may include headaches, leg pain, sciatica, fibromyalgia / chronic pain, and spinal arthritis. Because the spine has so many nerves in and around it, a misalignment can affect the integrity of the whole body. A misaligned vertebra can pinch nerves, restrict blood flow, and cause inflammation that interferes with an individual’s quality of life.

If left untreated, the inflammation that spinal misalignment causes can also decrease an individual’s resistance to illness. This in turn may make chronic illness a common condition.

Correcting Spinal Misalignment

At the Charleston Pain Relief Center, Dr. Tharnish and her team aim to relieve the pain and discomfort caused by spinal misalignment, as well as assessing and repairing the damage done to the body as a result of subluxation. Spinal misalignment and the related symptoms are relatively common issues, and fortunately, these symptoms usually do not require surgical intervention to remedy. Our treatments for are non-surgical and non-pharmaceutical. Most relief methods involve simple spinal adjustment or manipulation. These treatments may be supplemented with other tools and additions like temperature therapy, physical therapy, and massage techniques to relieve pain and pressure.
